December 18, 2010

Doug Laurenzo, 60, of 1614 Summit Street, Eau Claire, WI died suddenly on December 18, 2010.

He was born the youngest child of Vincent and Billie Jean (Garver) Laurenzo on January 21, 1950.  He lived his youth in Perry, Iowa and graduated from Dowling in Des Moines.

His university days were spent at St. John’s in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he received degrees in Theology and English. Little could he have imagined then that his career path would lead him to nursing.  He had a lifetime of service in different aspects of mental health care and some years working at Mount Senario. It was while working in adolescent psych, that he met his reason for living, Carol Strunc, who became his partner in life.

Doug’s favorite places were his own backyard and the Czech Republic. In their 30th year together, Carol and Doug were married in Bechyne, Czech Republic. It was in the Czech Republic they spent some of their most precious times together.

Doug was a brilliant, witty unique person who made a difference in people’s lives.

Besides Carol, he leaves to mourn him, his companion cats, Pivo, Stela and Spike; his Slog family: Sara and Steven Olson (also best friends), and their children Leicha and Nate, and grandchildren, Kahtjana and Nastassja, Muryl Olson, Joyce Mack and their children, Darian, Chris and Emily; dearest friends: Pat and Jen Benedict and their children and our godchildren, Bailey and Kerry; Carol’s brothers, sisters, and their families; and his girlfriend, Shelly Lenz.

It will surprise no one that Doug did not want a funeral. We will celebrate having known him with a “Doug-A-Thon” the weekend of his birthday on Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 4 p.m. throughout the evening at the Seymour Town Hall. You may call Carol closer to that time for further details.

A special thank you to his physician, Dr. Pat Kress, who treated him so well; also to the staff on the critical care unit at Sacred Heart Hospital, and to Danielle, RN, on second floor.

Chippewa Valley Cremation Services is serving the family.
